Why to Write

December 12, 2010

I used to write. A lot. Over time, other things began to take its place. So why pick it back up now? Well, for one, I’m turning forty. It’s one of those milestones that seems to need to be marked by some kind of change. I’ve thought about a blog for a while, inspired by writing pals from high school who now blog or write professionally. So here it goes.

Nonfiction expository writing is what I’ve always done best. I lack a vivid enough imagination for fiction. I learned from experience that I’m too much of an introvert for reporting. But writing about life, my interests, opinions, that I can do. Sounds about right for a blog, doesn’t it? After all, back in those Camp SAGA days, the mantra was “write what you know.”

So why to write? Because it’s a way to tie this phase of my life to an earlier one. A new adventure with roots in my youth. I like the way that feels. But don’t ask me about how forty feels. It’s too early to tell.
